Long ago, Sogolon married Nare Maghan, King of the Mali Empire. The King was very happy because Sogolon was a great and strong-willed woman, and when she became pregnant Nare Maghan was even happier. But the other women of the land became jealous of Sogolon?s condition, esspiacly Sassouma.
Sassouma already had a strong son, who she was certin would become King because of his strength and nobility. She was afraid that Sogolon was going to have a son that would be stronger than her own. And she would lose her place as Queen.
Sassouma wanted Sogolon and her unborn child killed. She called to her presence three witches to put a deadly curse on Sogolon. But all three of the witches could not find a way to kill the pregant Sogolon.
When Sogolon gave birth to a baby boy, the Kingdoms drums anounced the joyious birth to all the land. The King named his new son Mari Djata and the three of them lived in the kingdom happily for three years. But after three years, the toddler son of the great king had not taken his first steps and all the land mocked and made fun of Sogolon. The King was ashamed of his crippled son and took back the name he gave his son, and renamed him after his mother, Sogolon Djata. Sassouma was pleased at Sogolon?s misforutne, because it ensured her son?s right to the throne.
Four years later, King Nare Maghan died and left the kingdom to the strongest young man of the land, Sassouma? son. Beeing in the position of the Queen, Sassouma baned Sogolon and her son to the outskirts of the Kingdom where they were to watch over the gardens.
